At 7.40 a.m. on Wednesday, the 27-year-old fisherman from Huarte, Aitor Aristregui and you fishing rod, took the first salmon of the 2019 season from Bidasoa. A female of 6,460 kg, 83 cm long and 180 mm high, which has been caught by spoon in Bera, in the so-called Tunnel well, some 200 metres upstream of the Well of Los Cincuenta.

It is a beautiful specimen in good condition marked with micro mark, from the repopulation of the fish farm of Oronoz-Mugairi and that as noted by the guards of Environment had already a few days in the river, has reported the Government foral. The lehenbiziko has been sold to the San Sebastian restaurant Rekondo for 1,800 euros. The season began last Sunday, so today was the third day of salmon fishing, as this Tuesday could not be fished.

So far they have taken two 'strides', as they call the specimens that have already spawned and with the spring floods return to the sea. The fishing of these specimens is prohibited because they are very weak animals after spawning and are not in good condition. They should not be bitten, and in the case of accidental catches, they should be returned to the water with as little damage as possible. Until 2016, it was usual for the first salmon to be caught in the Los Cincuenta well.

Since the Endarlatsa dam was demolished, all lehenbizikos have been captured upstream. As was the case in 2018, the salmon fishing season at the Bidasoa has begun earlier than usual, and opened on Sunday 14 April. The system of granting permits similar to the one used for trout fishing is maintained.

That is to say, to fish salmon in the salmon section of the river Bidasoa, in addition to the license, it is necessary to get a daily permit and personal. The season will close when the 66th specimen is caught or, if the 66th specimen is not caught, on 31 July.

According to data provided by the Circular Economy and Water Service, since 2000 only one fisherman has repeated the capture of the lehenbiziko: Jose Luis López in 2006 and 2008. Most of them have been caught by spoon and only four by fly. Throughout this century, the largest specimen was caught in 2009, a salmon 890 mm long and 6,950 grams in weight. The smallest was caught in 2016 and with just 654 mm in length and 2,250 grams. The average for the last two decades is 783 mm and does not reach 5 kilograms (4,997 g).

NORMATIVE For salmon fishing, Environment will issue a maximum of 100 permits per day. Authorisations can be applied for either via the internet or by calling 012 Info navarra (or 948 012 012 from outside Navarre). The permit will be daily and personal. There is no limit to the maximum number of permits per fisherman per season. They work every day of the week, except on Tuesdays which are not public holidays, and the minimum size is 50 cm.

The salmon caught may be donated alive to the Department for use as reproducers or other studies of the species. To do so, please contact the Environmental Nursery at 686 50 28 33 as soon as possible. The regulations governing the 2019 campaign, both in terms of dates, areas, gear, number of specimens and size of them is detailed in the Foral Order 32/2019 of 26 February, whose content has also been collected in a brochure on fishing rules.
