Bronzed 30 minute Hourglass HG007

Bronzed 30 minute Hourglass HG007

Bronzed 30 minute Hourglass HG007 by Authentic Models . Eighteenth century industrial design, bronze and wood, collectible for their combined historical and practical value. Some antique hourglasses measured up to two hours, used at a time when church pews were designed by the Inquisition to torture the human back. Ship's hourglasses were calibrated to the half-hours of the ship's clock, and if the helmsman did not turn the glass too soon, it actually doubled to define the longitude. Sailors tried to keep track of the hours; shipwrecked galleons on the reefs of Western Australia remind us of the dangers of keeping time wrong. To appreciate the important symbolism of the hourglass, Renaissance artists painted still lifes, also called Vanitas, full of symbolism and morals. In them hourglasses are very often depicted. Beautiful French tanned and honey-aged finish. 13,5 cm.
